Mapple . . .

Mapple is a Geographic Information System (GIS) application that allows anyone browsing the internet to create and download a wide variety of legislative ditstrict maps in the State of California. The application was originally developed with funds from the UC Systemwide Biotechnology Research and Education Program and then, through an structural change within this program, was further developed through funds form the UC University Industry Cooperative Research Program (both beneath Dr. Susanne Huttner and Dr. Cherisa Yarkin).

The GIS server side engine is based on the server software 'MapXTreme' provided by MapInfo. In conjunction with the MapXTreme software there is a large visual basic application that handles all of the user interface with the GIS data and the actual manipulation of the GIS data if the user has so requested. The third compnent of the Mapple system is the data itself which can be broken into two important parts. There is the base data which includes roads, rivers, coastlines, districts, towns, etc., and there is the data that is being mapped, in the two cases shown on this site the industry data gathered by the University of California.

Click on the diagram at the left for a clearer description of how Mapple functions within the framework of MapXTreme and the Base Data sets.

During the end of 2005 we will be adapting the system to use the open-source software MapServer. We hope to release the application under an open-source license sometime in 2006.

Thanks for the visit and feel free to contact us for any sort of question or information.
