Coral World . . .

The Coral World map published by the National Geographic Comittee for Research and Exploration is the first product of the CRE's Terramar Initiative—established in 1996 to focus on the world's critical coastal zones. The Coral World project was run as a contract between the Committee for Research and Exploration and GeoMap; GeoMap was a Berkeley based mapping team run by the late Dr. Bernard Nietschmann.

This incarnation of GeoMap included Tim Norris, Steve Rose, Madison Roswell and Allen Wicks. Tim Norris participated as a consultor to GeoMap with the responsibilities of project management, poster design, and cartography. Steve Rose was an essential team member with responsibilities including artwork and the detailed cartography. Madison Roswell was in charge of the cartographic design and photography for the photo montage on the backside of the map. Allen Wicks was our professional underwater photographer for the project.

   The Map

Note: the map used a projection invented by Dr. Bernard Nietschmann and Tim Norris known as the Nietschmann-Norris Equatorial. This projection is a modification of the Robinson projection; literally the map was projected using the classic Robinson projection and then wrapped around an ellipsoid to give an accurate projection between 30 degrees north and 30 degrees south while still including latitudes up to 60 degrees north or south for reference. It was essential to invent this projection for the Coral World map in order to include a world coverage without a lot of wasted space.

   The Photo Montage

Note: This photo montage includes ofver 200 photographs put together in Photoshop. The result is a cross-section of the reef ecosystem from the coastal mangrove forests to the outer drop-off of the coral reef.
